How to Travel Safely
Travelling can be an exciting time of exploration and even relaxation. However, sometimes unfortunate instances befall travellers while they are abroad. When this happens, they are more vulnerable than when they are at home. We have outlined some of the most common threats and mishaps that domestic and overseas travellers may face while on their trips.
By being aware of them, you should be a position to try and avoid becoming a victim. This list is not exhaustive, but does give a good idea as to what sorts of things threaten safe travel.
1. Mugging
A mugging occurs when someone forcefully takes property from you. In most places, it is the biggest threat to travel safety.
Avoid crowded areas as much as possible, and try not to display valuable items to the general public. Ensure that all bags are properly closed. If possible, try and keep you bags in front of you while going though large crowds.
2. Kidnapping and Human Trafficking
Kidnapping is becoming more and more common; especially in poorer countries. In severe cases, it leads to human trafficking or terrorism. Gone are the days when criminals were satisfied with ransom payments for their kidnapped victims.
Trafficking human beings for cheap labour and sexual slavery is fast becoming the world’s biggest organised crime. In some places, human trafficking is a much bigger crime than drugs smuggling. 3. Drugs Smuggling
Believe it or not, drug smuggling still attracts many travellers. A lot of travellers get tempted to or tricked into smuggling drugs across borders. The consequences of being caught are always quite heavy, but can carry the death penalty in some jurisdiction.
drugs smuggling is often linked to terrorism and other serious organised crimes in foreign countries. In addition, travellers should avoid being drugged while in unknown territories, such as night clubs and other crowded party venues.
4. Lost Travel Documents and Lost Bank Cards
This alone can cause a variety of other problems. Lost travel documents and lost bank cards will put a traveller in a situation of desperation as well as anonymity. When this happens, travel safety is severely compromised. Having no money or no way of identifying yourself while you are away from home can be nothing short of a nightmare.
Travellers should keep al their personal belongings safe at all times. Another safeguard is to take out suitable travel insurance before setting off on your journey.
