Escape to Sunny Los Angeles, California
Los Angeles, initially a settlement of just 44 Spanish missionaries, is now the second most populated city in the U.S. This mecca of palm trees, high fashion, and stardom sprawls from the San Fernando Valley down to the Hollywood Hills, Venice Beach, and South L.A.
All told, it encompasses almost 500 square miles of diverse topography, varied culture, and memorable attractions. Here are some top things to do in Los Angeles.
No trip to southern California is complete without a stop in Hollywood. Tinseltown is once again attracting celebrities and other trendsetters with new chic restaurants, clubs, and boutiques.
Perennial attractions include Grauman’s Chinese Theater, the Walk of Fame, and Griffith Park. Popular museums in the area include Ripley’s Believe it or Not and the Hollywood Wax Museum, which lets visitors pose with Elvis Presley and other stars.
Want live performances? Purchase tickets to the Hollywood Bowl. The outdoor amphitheater is beautifully situated among the hills of southern California. With a capacity greater than 17,000, this venue has attracted shows as diverse as The Doors, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Prairie Home Companion.
To escape the busy city, check out Malibu Creek State Park and the nearby Malibu Beach. The state park was once owned by film studios, and remnants of the M.A.S.H. set – Jeeps covered with prairie grass – can be found among gorgeous walking paths. Meanwhile, Malibu Beach and others in the area comprise a 27-mile stretch of scenic beauty.
Other popular tourist activities include staying at the Disneyland Resort, visiting Knott’s Berry Farm, touring the world-class Getty Museum, and shopping at the farmer’s market at 3rd and Fairfax.
